Rant takes a video of you talking, removes the filler words and dead air, burns in captions, and gives you back a vertical clip. This page explains exactly what happens to your video and your data along the way, in the order it happens.
What we collect
| What | Why | How long we keep it |
|---|---|---|
| Your email address | It is your account. We use it to send sign-in codes and links and, if you subscribe, billing receipts. If you sign in with Apple and choose Hide My Email, it is the relay address Apple gives us. If you sign in with Google, it is your Google Account's address. | Until you delete your account |
| The video you upload, and in the iPhone app a separate copy of its audio | To transcribe, cut and caption it, and to support non-destructive edits that need the original footage, such as Slip. | Deleted together with the finished clip, on the same schedule |
| The finished clip | So you can download it. | Deleted 30 days after it is made without an active subscription, or up to 365 days after it is made while you have an active subscription |
| The transcript and cut list | To show you which words were removed and let you put them back. | Until you delete your account |
| Your IP address | Rate limiting and abuse prevention. Nothing else. | With the job record |
| Your scripts, the topics you tell us you talk about, and a speaking-style profile worked out from your transcripts (such as your pace and phrases you often use) | To write scripts that sound like you. | Until you delete your account |
| Your answers to the two permission questions (before your first rant, and before your first script), and when you gave them | So nothing is sent to Deepgram or OpenAI without your permission for that purpose, and so we are not asking every time. | Until you delete your account |
| Your answer to "Did we cut this right?", if you give one | To learn whether our cutting rules took out too much or too little. It is stored with that rant and used for nothing else. | With the rant |
| Your device's notification token, if you allow notifications | To tell you when a rant is ready. | Until you delete your account |
| Error and export reports from the app: the error message and its technical detail, where in the app it happened and your device's browser version string, and for a video export the rant's ID, how long each step took and which storage server the file came from. Your email address and account ID are not included. | To find and fix faults. | In our hosting provider's logs, for as long as that provider keeps them |
We do not ask for your name, phone number, date of birth, location or contacts. We do not use tracking pixels, advertising cookies, or third-party analytics. The only cookie Rant sets is the one that keeps you signed in.
Where your video goes
Being specific matters more here than reassuring language, so here is the actual path:
- The app, or your browser, uploads the file directly to our storage provider using a link that is scoped to one file and expires. The video does not pass through our servers on the way in. In the iPhone app, the audio of the take is also uploaded on its own, so the cut can start before the video has finished uploading.
- A render worker downloads it and sends the audio only, with any names you have corrected or typed as a product so they are spelled right, to Deepgram for transcription with word-level timings. Your video frames are never sent to any third party.
- The worker cuts, captions and re-encodes the clip, uploads the result, and deletes its local copy.
- A scheduled job deletes the original upload, its audio and the finished clip together: 30 days after the clip is made without an active subscription, or up to 365 days after it is made while you have an active subscription. The original is kept that long so that edits which need it, such as Slip, keep working; once it is deleted those edits are no longer available for that clip.
Plainly: your video is processed on our servers, not on your device. If you need a tool where footage never leaves your phone, Rant is not that tool. What we can promise is a short, enforced retention window and that we never use your footage to train anything.
Where AI is used, and on what
Rant uses machine learning in three places. Being exact about which is more useful than a blanket disclosure:
- Transcription. The audio from your clip, and any names you have corrected or typed as a product, go to Deepgram, which returns the words with timings. Everything else the app does (the cut, the captions, the receipt) is built on that transcript.
- Scripts, script ideas and post captions. Generated by OpenAI when you use script writing or ask for a post caption. A script is written from what you ask for, the topics you have told us you talk about, and short excerpts of your past transcripts so it sounds like you. A post caption is written from the words kept in that one rant, and only when you tap for it. These are suggestions. They can be wrong, and nothing is published anywhere by us. You read them, change them, and decide what to say.
- The cut itself. Which words are filler, which are false starts and which pauses are dead air is decided by our own rules running over the transcript, not by a third party.
Rant asks your permission before anything is sent to either, separately for each. Before your first rant, it asks before your audio goes to our third-party transcription service, which is Deepgram. Before your first script or post caption, it asks before anything goes to our third-party AI service, which is OpenAI. If you do not give a permission, nothing is sent to that service: rants cannot be made without the first, and scripts cannot be written without the second. Making a rant never sends anything to OpenAI; asking for a post caption sends that rant's kept words.
We do not generate video, faces, or voices, and we never put words in your mouth that you did not say: every word in a finished rant is a word you actually said, minus the ones that were removed.
What we never do
- We do not sell your data, to anyone, for any price.
- We do not use your videos, audio or transcripts to train machine-learning models, ours or anybody else's. Every request to Deepgram opts out of its model improvement program, so Deepgram does not train on your audio either.
- We do not show your content to other users. Every clip is private to the account that made it.
- No human at Rant watches your videos. Access is limited to what is needed to fix a fault you have reported to us.
Posting to your social accounts
Connecting Instagram, TikTok or YouTube is entirely optional. Rant works fully without it, and nothing is connected unless you go through that platform's own consent screen and approve it yourself.
When you connect an account we store the access token that platform issues, the account's ID on that platform, and its username or channel name. Tokens are encrypted at rest. We do not receive or store your password for any social account. The platform never gives it to us.
We ask each platform for the narrowest permission that does the job: permission to publish a video you have chosen to publish, and enough profile access to show you which account you are posting to. We do not request, and cannot use, permission to read your messages, your followers, your existing posts, or your analytics.
A reel is only sent to a platform when you tap the button for it. Rant never posts on your behalf on a schedule, in the background, or without that tap.
Disconnecting. You can disconnect any account from inside Rant, which deletes the stored token immediately. You can also revoke Rant's access from the platform's own settings, which has the same effect. Deleting your Rant account deletes every stored connection along with it.
Google / YouTube specifically. Rant's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We use YouTube data only to upload the video you asked us to upload. We do not transfer it to anyone, use it for advertising, or allow humans to read it, except where you explicitly ask us to for support or where the law requires it. By connecting YouTube you are also agreeing to the YouTube Terms of Service.
Companies we rely on
Running Rant means using a few other services. Each one gets only what it needs to do its job:
- Vercel: hosting for the website, the app's pages and our servers, including their logs. It also still stores some video files made before we moved storage to Cloudflare.
- Cloudflare: storage for your uploaded and finished video files.
- Railway: the render workers that cut and caption your clips, and the database holding your account and job records.
- Deepgram: speech-to-text. Receives the audio track of your clip and any names you have corrected or typed as a product, nothing else.
- OpenAI: script writing and post captions. Receives what you ask for, your saved topics and short excerpts of your past transcripts when you use script writing, and the kept words of one rant when you ask for its post caption.
- Resend: sends your sign-in emails. Receives your email address.
- Stripe: payments on the web. Receives your email address and handles your card details directly. Rant never sees or stores your card number.
- Apple: payments in the iPhone app, through the App Store, and Sign in with Apple if you use it. Apple handles your payment details; we receive a signed record of the subscription, never your card. With Sign in with Apple we receive an identifier for your Apple ID and the email address you chose to share, never your password, and we keep a token Apple gives us only so we can withdraw Rant's access when you delete your account.
- Google: Continue with Google, if you use it. Google signs you in on its own page; we receive an identifier for your Google Account and its email address, never your password, and we ask for nothing else: not your name, contacts, files or mail. We keep no Google token and never act on your Google Account.
- Expo: delivers notifications, if you allow them, and updates to the app itself. Receives your device's notification token and the notification text, which it passes to Apple to deliver; an update check carries your IP address and the app's version.
- Google Fonts: supplies the typefaces for captions and on-screen text. Your device requests them from Google, which receives your IP address and browser details, not your video or your words.
- Meta, TikTok and Google: only if you connect those accounts, and only then. Each receives the reel you asked us to post and the caption you approved. Once a video is posted it lives under that platform's own terms and privacy policy, not ours, and removing it is done there.
These providers process data in the United States, and our render workers and database run in the Netherlands. If you use Rant from elsewhere, your data is transferred to those places.
Deleting everything
You can delete your account from inside Rant at any time. It removes your account, every job record, every transcript, and every video file still in storage. It is immediate and it cannot be undone.
A subscription billed by us on the web is cancelled as part of deleting your account, so it cannot keep charging you. An App Store subscription is not: only you can cancel it, in your App Store subscription settings, and Rant reminds you of this before you delete.
Deleted data can remain in backup copies made so we can recover from a failure. The copies we make of our own records contain account details (your email address, plan and a list of your rants), never videos or transcripts.
If you would rather we did it, email support@tryrant.app from your account address.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export or delete the personal data we hold about you, and to object to certain processing. Rant's answer to all of these is the same address: support@tryrant.app. We will respond within 30 days.
Children
Rant is not intended for anyone under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has created an account, email us and we will delete it.
Security
All traffic uses HTTPS. Upload links are time-limited and scoped to one file. Sign-in tokens are stored hashed, expire in fifteen minutes and work once. Sessions are signed, HTTP-only cookies; in the iPhone app the same signed session is kept in your device's keychain. No system is perfectly secure, and we will tell you promptly if we ever discover a breach affecting your data.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that materially affects how we handle your data, we will email you before it takes effect. The date at the top always reflects the current version.
